Ethanol Producer Magazine recently named its 2019 Project of the Year award to the Fluid Quip Technologies’ Maximized Stillage Co-Products (MSC™) installation at Flint Hills Resources Fairmont Nebraska facility.

The project transformed the Flint Hills facility with the largest co-product technology system in the ethanol industry, creating a new revenue stream for the plant. MSC technology produces high-value protein animal feed from a portion of the distillers grains produced during the ethanol production process. Flint Hills Resources branded the 50% protein product NexProand has already begun marketing the product worldwide.

“The MSC project at Flint hills in Fairmont, NE is exactly what a project of the year should be; this technology has been a game changer in the biofuels industry, transforming ethanol facilities into revenue machines with a $.10-.20 /Gal uplift on EBITDA. The Fairmont project has also been the largest single co-product technology bolt on project ever completed in the ethanol space”, says Neal Jakel, VP Strategy and Development, Fluid Quip Technologies. Jakel continued, “We are very proud of what our team has produced here and with the partnership we have begun with the FHR team; not only as a plant producer of the 50% protein product, but also as one of our preferred marketers of the protein for other facilities as they come online.”

The unique properties of the MSC protein make it an excellent ingredient for aquaculture, pet food, and poultry. The first FQT MSC system began commercial operations in 2009 and many years of development work has been completed on the product and markets. Flint Hills Resources has contracted with Fluid Quip Technologies to provide a second MSC system at the Flint Hills Resources Shell Rock facility to increase production of protein and improve plant margins.
